A taste of the Woodford Folk Festival 2012… and it’s not over yet!

The Woodford Folk Festival has been part of my life for over 14 years. See, WFF is my local festival – I literally live 20 minutes down the road from here.

I visited the WFF for the first time in the summer of 1998 with a bunch of friends from school – it was the Golden Summer between high school and University for me.

Back in 1998, I vividly remember in the second row at The Whitlams gig… I believe they were preceded by the Pixies. I didn’t know who the Pixies were, but I hung off every word Tim Freedman sang. I remember the crowds, the heat, the rain, the mud, the smiles, the costumes… and the sense of being somewhere wholly ‘other’. Somewhere not of this world.

Now I’m here again, 14 years later, at the 27th WFF. I’ve visited a few times in the interim, but this is my first full festival – camping in The Luggage and getting the chance to truly immerse myself in all the festival has to offer.

If visiting for the day is fantastic, staying for the whole festival is a whole ‘nother paradigm. It allows you to sink into the alternate universe that is the Land of Woodfordia, and spend a week living in an alternate universe of peace, love, and fun.

I’m going to do a number of posts highlighting different aspects of my time here in Woodfordia, but today, I wanted to give you all a little taste of everything you can experience here – and what is still to come.

WFF is definitely NOT ‘just another music festival’. The music is a central part, for sure… but there is so very much more going on.

For example, in the last few days, I have:

Taken two morning yoga classes with Core Yoga from West End.

Done Tai Chi on the Village Green.

Drunk iced chai tea (it’s hot in the Land of Woodfordia) under the Rainbow Chai tent.

Watched acrobats do their thing. (This is the Pitts Family Circus.)

Learnt how to make a traditional Russian Woven Belt.

Eaten a stack of super-tasty food (this is a Hungarian Flat Bread – yummmmm).

Gotten a hair wrap thanks to Alchemy Hair Art – something I never got around to doing when I was a teenager.

Browsed the many shop stalls.

Watched a lantern parade.

And, of course… listened to some music. And danced. I particularly enjoyed Half Moon Run out of Canada…

…and local girl done good, Kate Miller-Heidke.

Oh, and by the way – once you’re through the gates, all performances, dance/yoga/circus (etc) workshops, and talks are free. The amazing array of craft workshops cost, but only a little.

Only two days down, four still to go – and I’m settling in to this wonderful country of Woodfordia that appears out of the aether each and every year.

Are you coming to play?

If you live in South-East Queensland, the festival is on until Tuesday – culminating in the Fire Event on Tuesday night.

Check out the website to see what’s happening during the rest of the festival. If you’d like to follow my journey through festival time and space, pop on over and follow me on twitter and instagram. Also follow the hastag #WWF.

My time at WFF is thanks to Tourism Queensland and the Queensland Folk Federation. All photography (C) Jess Van Den.

Music for your Ears… and your Neck… the new Treble Clef Designs

In amongst all the Christmas orders and other work I’ve been doing this week (not to mention the sore back that has slowed me down!) I’ve managed – no, I have been driven! – to create these three new designs and get them online in time for Christmas. Sometimes, the muse just won’t leave you alone, and she can have the most terrible timing.

I actually first conceived of a treble clef design years ago, but never got around to perfecting it. This week, in between orders, I played – and these three new designs are the result. I’m especially fond of the Treble Clef Urban Eco Earrings, because they are such a fun and unique design. However, I know they’re not everyone’s style, so I also wanted to make a more traditional set of treble clef designs – and hence the matching earrings and necklace came about.

I’ve always thought the treble clef was a beautiful thing, and I’m so happy with how I’ve managed to translate the design into sterling silver. I’m hoping that musical peeps will really love these designs – I can’t claim to be a musician any more (though I played clarinet in school and have a cello sitting in the corner, waiting for me to find a teacher!) but music is a huge part of my life.

Win a Designer tap{TM} Stainless Steel Bottle + Tickets to the Powerhouse Museum

A few months back, I told you guys about a design competition being run by the tap™ division of Sydney Water. I loved the idea, because I’m hugely in favour of drinking tap water over bottled water – I have my very own metal water bottle that I carry around – I believe I grabbed this one at Typo a while back!

{btw, anyone have any idea who this artist is?}

Anyhoo, they got in touch with me the other week to let me know the 5 winning designs had been chosen, and to offer 10 bottles to you guys as a giveaway!

Just to refresh your memory:

To encourage more people to drink tap water, tap™ invited the community to help design their tap™ bottle. Participants were asked to use their bottle designs to show why sustainability is important to them.

From the submissions, the five most popular were selected, as voted by the tap™ Facebook community. These will be produced as a limited edition series of 2000, and given away to the public via a fortnightly Tappyhour competition on the tap™ Twitter page. {This is still happening right up until Christmas!}

Here are the 5 winning designs – I think my fave is either number 2 or number 5… not sure. The penguin makes me feel sad for some reason.

From 23 October – 6 November, you can check out the five new tap™ bottles and interactive showcase at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. A custom-designed, interactive showcase will be created to feature the five bottle designs. Using hand gestures, audiences can explore each of the designs, and learn more about artists. I love it when art + function come together in good design, don’t you?

Giveaway

tap™ are offering 10 bottles for this giveaway – each winner will also receive a ticket to the exhibit at the Powerhouse Museum!

Alas, this competition is only open to my readers in NSW, Australia (sorry fellow non-NSW peeps!). It runs all weekend – winners will be contacted on Monday.

Enter below, and good luck! And hey, make sure to leave a comment letting me know which is your fave design so I can get that one sent to you if you win!
