TGAGS – Week 6 – With a Horse – and more…

Like to know what The Great Australian Granny Square (TGAGS) is all about? Go here!

***

I have kept TGAGS growing this week, finishing off that lovely ball of purple yarn, and keeping the theme going with a skein of sweet pink yarn donated by Sally. This week I thought I’d show you all a little more of my life, so I roped in our (well, my mum’s) horse, Filly (not her proper name, but what we always call her). We’ve had Filly for as long as I can remember, there are photos of me sitting on her when I am very young.

To my mum’s great disappointment, I never was a ‘horse girl’ – I wasn’t interested in riding. Apparently the love of horses skips a generation in my family – I think she’s holding out hope that if I ever have kids, they might be into horses.

I mentioned last week that I was planning to make a granny square blanket, currently using lots of little scraps from donated yarn from TGAGS project -plus my own stash – and lots of white yarn, to make a blanket that looks like this:

And since I set you all a challenge to aim to make a ‘granny a day’ in June, I thought it was time to show you my progress! I took some time off over the weekend, and managed to get a few more squares done – here’s what I’ve done so towards this blanket:

I’m really happy with how these are looking so far – and they’re so much fun to make, too!

So, what do you think? I’m not really sticking to any colour scheme, except for the overall design of 2 colours per square, surrounded by white. I can’t wait until I’ve got a whole lot more and I can start putting them together!

An Ode to Craft Widowers…

Do you have a craft widower in your life?

You know, that guy who you live with?

The one who always has to step over your pile of fabric as it slowly creeps along the floor?

Who has to clear a space on the table every time he wants to use it because it’s covered in your beads/paper/yarn?

Who brings you a cup of hot beverage when you’re working away…

Who bemoans the amount of time you spend online – claiming you spend more time chatting on Twitter than you do talking to him?

Well, he needs to know he’s not alone. This is an ode – and a thank you – to all those craft widowers who put up with our mess, our distraction, our strange obsessions…

You know we still love you, and we’ll come to bed soon…

…right after we finish this last listing…

This is my craft widower… and boy, does he take it with good grace. The amount of tea he has made me over the years has to truly be without measure.

I guess I should call Gobbolino (cat of a thousand names) my crafty orphan, too. Many has been the time he’s come over to me and I’ve been too busy on the computer to pay him any attention. Not that that’s stopped him getting it, mind you. I’m sure your fur-kids or real kids have the same attitude…

What does your crafty widower do for you when you’re in your creative headspace?

Or – what does he NOT do that you’d like him to?

Share with us in the comments below!

(P.S. – if you’re a crafty guy and have a craft widow in your life… we’d love to hear from you, too!)

Nook is owned and run by Michelle Gillies out of her home in West End, Brisbane (BrisStylettes may know Michelle from her own label, Pedrospout).

Just up the road from the main shopping strip on Boundary Street, Nook is tucked away amongst other little salons and shops. You can’t miss the bright signs and inviting window display as you walk past!Inside, there’s a cornucopia of craft! Jewellery, bags, homewares, art, brooches, books, mugs, mags, clothes… you get the idea! I spotted a few of my crafty friends’ goods in there – the likes of Pocket Carnival
