This was a tough one!
While Embroidery Hoop Art seems big in the US, I haven’t found many Aussies who are selling it (I’ve dabbled with the idea, myself – I love a little bit of embroidery). I did, however, find 10 awesome Aussies who incorporate embroidery into their designs – in some interesting ways, too!
All Photos sourced from the designer’s webpages.
1. Edward & Lily
When I thought ’embroidery’, Edward & Lily were the first to pop into my head. Rebecca is a Brisbane designer, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her at a crafty meet-up or two. She makes an adorable range of brooches, lavender bird pouches, softies, and other pretty things.
2. Art Decadence
The lovely Chrisy from Art Decadence makes a range of strange and wonderful goodies. There’s a stong Alice-in-Wonderland theme running through her shop (now, this started far before the latest movie!) But she definitely pays homage to the beautiful yet disturbing undercurrent in that story…
3. Muddle + Flow
A Melbourne designer of hand-stitched jewelley and accessories, Muddle + Flow is one to keep an eye on!
4. Ruby-Jo
Jo is another Melbourne-based designer. She primarily makes lovely brooches – but also the odd bag or two. I was lucky enough to receive one of her bags in a craft swap, and was it lovely!
5. Plus 1 Design
Kirrily from Plus 1 Design makes a gorgeous range of bags and purses. Her range of Adorn purses have sweet embroidery patterns hand-stitched on, like this one… so pretty!
6. Jennifer’s Gift
Jennifer works with machine embroidery – designing her patterns on her laptop and then encoding them into her machine. Craft and technology!
7. Radical Rags
Completed items and patterns can both be found here! And be-warned – this is not embroidery for the faint-hearted!
8. Tamara Russell
Textile artist Tamara Russell makes a wide range of beautiful embroidered lovelies – from buttons to art!
9. Feed the Dog
Artist Carmel Killin makes a range of fabric-based designs, using embroidery as a big element of her work.
10. Living Thread
Not embroidery for those who mind a bit of violence! Featuring skulls and half-eaten gingerbread men… it’s one for the slightly more hard-assed amongst us.
That’s it! I hope you enjoyed this journey through Aussie Embroiderers. Next time, I’ll be sharing 10 Aussie Indie Designers of Women’s Dresses.
