Seaworthy – Artisan Feature and Giveaway

This week we welcome Marisa and her beautiful shop, Seaworthy. I am a little bit in love with Marisa’s lovely lace and crochet jewellery… read on to find out more about her and to win $30 worth of gorgeousness from her shop!

Where do you live?

I currently live in Portland, Oregon.

Where do you do your work?

I work out of a small space in my house.

What’s your favourite place in the world, and why?

Oh boy, this is so cliche but my favorite place in the world is my mom’s house. She still lives in the house that my brother and I were raised in. I mostly love it because she is there but also because its filled with memories and all the comforts of home. Close runner up would Short Sands Beach at Oswald West State Park on the Oregon Coast. Get there early enough to see the fog, stay long enough to enjoy the sun. It’s truly a wonderland: the forest, the creek, the beach, the ocean, the surfers, the cliffs, the waves…wish I was there now!

Tell us a little bit more about yourself! Your ‘day job’ or business, family, hobbies…

I’m currently sharing a home with the two loves of my life, my boyfriend, Clyde, and our dog, Sable. I have irons in a few fires at the moment. Seaworthy is my main focus but I also write and edit for Momentum Magazine and do some freelance writing work.  I also enjoy riding my bike around Portland and doing as much yoga as possible. I’m starting yoga teacher training in July!

What did you want to be ‘when you grew up’?

A million things and it’s been ever changing… a vet, a doctor, a dancer and a writer.

How did you first get into your craft/art?

I’ve been making crafts for as long as I can remember. As a child it was Fimo beads, cross stitch, paint by number, sewing projects, art projects, etc.  I’ve had a few stints with making jewelry through out my life as well. But when I started combing my love of found vintage objects with jewelry making, I knew I was on to something. Not because everything sold right away (it didn’t), but because of how much I enjoyed doing it. It started with a jar full of old keys that I had been collecting. One day, I just put one on a chain and started wearing it. People loved it and Seaworthy Jewelry just grew from there.

What do you make?

Jewelry using found vintage objects. This could include crochet, skeleton keys, pendants, lockets, glass knobs, beads, etc.

What are you most proud of making?

Probably the necklaces with the vintage crochet. I really enjoy putting them together.

What do you like the most/least about selling your wares online?

I like that I can reach a broad audience and share my work with people that I normally wouldn’t be able to selling locally. My least favorite thing is not getting to meet buyers in person or see them try something on. I love seeing how the item looks on someone else.

What’s your favourite word?

I really like the word “flotsam”. I don’t have a use for it but it means debris that is left at sea, I guess I like ocean related terms.

The Charity Lampwork Bead Auction!

I have something pretty special coming up on the blog over the next few weeks.

Cate Bolt of Project 18 recently sent me a mammoth bag of beautiful lampwork beads (I believe the majority of these to be handmade). She asked if I would be able to use them, or find them a good home, and I took on the challenge.

What she doesn’t know (that’s until she reads this post) is that I am going to find all of these beautiful beads new homes – and help support a few charities – but I need you to make it happen.

...and this isn't even all of them!

I am going to set up a Charity Auction, and I need your help. Here’s how it’s going to work:

  • Inspired by Cate’s own auctions on Facebook, I’m going to follow the same format. Over a few weeks, I’m going to add new beads or small sets/lots of beads to the Lampwork Charity Auction photo album on Facebook (this will be hosted on the Epheriell FB Page).
  • You will have 48 hours to bid on each bead/set by putting a price in the comments below each picture.
  • At the end of the 48 hours, the highest bidder wins, sends me their money, and I will send them their beads!

All the money raised through this auction will be split equally between Cate’s charity Project 18, and Kiva (I will subtract the postage costs, but that is all). What do these charities do?

Project 18 - ”Project 18 exists to improve the quality of life of orphaned and underprivileged children by providing a safe environment in which to grow, whilst educating them for a brighter future living in harmony with their environment.” (From the website) Basically, Cate – through her charity – is setting up orphanages in Indonesia for street kids.

Kiva – “Kiva’s mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty. Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining microfinance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending.” (From the website) Basically, through Kiva you can lend money to an entrepreneur in an underprivileged/impoverished situation, so they can build a business to support them, their families and their community.

Please, please, please spread the work about this to all your crafty friends! The more people we get involved, the more money we can raise for these wonderful charities. Link back to this post, and/or share the FB page/photo album with your friends.

I’ll post and update here when it’s ready to go!

Video Blog – What does ‘success’ mean for you?

Today I thought I’d share a video post with you all. In it, I discuss what ‘success’ and happiness in my work means for me – and ask the question of you – when will you know you have achieved ‘success’ in your creative business endeavours? What level of success will make you truly happy?

Crafty Biz: What does ‘success’ mean for you? from Jessica Van Den on Vimeo.

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

P.S. Please excuse the slightly scratchy audio, not quite sure what happened there!
