This time next week I’ll be on a plane winging from Brisbane to Kuala Lumpur, on the first leg of my Asian adventure! My girlfriend Mish and I will spend two weeks visiting Singapore, Krabi in Thailand (pictured above) and Langkawi in Malaysia (plus one night in KL before we fly home).
Apart from a one-night stop-over in South Korea on our way to England last year, this will be my first visit to Asia proper! It’s going to be a bit of a whirlwind trip, but I’m seeing it as a bit of a ‘taste-teste’ to scope out places I like that I might want to visit again in the future.
On this end, the blog will be going along pretty much as-normal – I’ve got a whole lot of wonderful guest posts lined up for you, and the lovely Megan will be keeping an eye on things for me while I’m away.
So… do you have any Asia travel tips for me? Are there any must-sees in these places? Tell me in the comments!
Have fun in Asia! I used to live in Malaysia, so I have some ideas! There are lots of good restaurants in KL. The best food EVER in Malaysia is found at a south Indian restaurant called Nirwana. It’s the best food I’ve ever eaten in my life and I miss it daily. If you’d like to go there, you can catch a cab and ask to go to Bangsar Village (it’s a mall). Nirwana is right across the street. Here is a pic I took of their sign:

Have the banana leaf rice with chicken curry. I usually also order a side of fried chicken (ayam goreng) and always lime juice to drink (limau ais). I literally ate here two nights a week when I lived in Malaysia.
My other favorite restaurant in Malaysia is called Sahara Tent. They are located right in Bukit Bintang so it’s -really- easy to get to (there is a Bukit Bintang monorail stop or you can take a cab). Here’s their website: http://saharatent.com/
I highly recommend their bathenjan (lamb + eggplant stew) or kebab Iraqi.
Thailand is amazing, and Krabi just beautiful. If you’re going to Railay, be sure to walk down to Ao Phra Nang. The beach is gorgeous. I have some photos on my blog from our trip last year, will post a link later if I remember.
We’re off to Malaysia & Vietnam in September. We love SE Asia!
EAT EVERYTHING!
I haven’t been to Malaysia and I’ve been to Thailand briefly (years ago) so I don’t have any many tips for those places but Singapore is amazing. I love that place.
You must visit the building that looks like Batman’s building. You’ll see it and know what I mean. If you visit it at night there’s a bar that’s very art deco and has an amazing ceiling high wine fridge that the bar girl (dressed in wings) gets hoisted up to to retrieve wine. A little exy but worth it, I think!
It’s also easy to get lost for hours in the shopping malls but I recommend spending time walking the streets and finding little hidden shop gems. 🙂
Hi Jess,
When you are in KL go to the Old China Cafe. Like stepping back in time. If its just a quick trip you don’t have to eat. Just have a cup of tea or just a look around.

Enjoy!

I’ve never been to Asia so I don’t have any tips, but it sounds fabulous!
Have a fantastic time Jess!
How exciting! Have a wonderful time Jess. I’ve been to KL and to Thailand (not Krabi though), and have been to Singapore many, many times. Thai food is my most favourite cuisine in the world, so please eat lots and lots so I can live vicariously through you!
As for Singapore, it’s not my favourite place in the world, but it is growing on me (slowly). The zoo is one of the best in the world (the night zoo is also great, but I’d recommend walking yourself rather than taking the guided tour on the train which has a really annoying commentary!). There are also lots of cute craft shops (like this one – http://doinkyupdates.blogspot.com/) and great book shops too (like this one – http://www.kinokuniya.com.sg/). Little India is pretty amazingly overwhelming, great for picking up some gorgeous fabric. Our favourite place to eat is called The Blue Ginger, near Chinatown (website is here – http://www.theblueginger.com/) but be prepared for some spice! Oh, and bring a good umbrella and some shoes that are okay with getting soaked (not thongs ’cause you’ll just slip out of them!).
