What is your craft, and why is it awesome?

I discovered printmaking in 1996 when I was between jobs (I’m an architect) & living in Vancouver, British Columbia. I walked by a sign on a gallery that said “Printmaking Classes”…& that was it!  I took about a year of classes there & more when I moved back east to Nova Scotia. I learned the proper techniques in classes but then just kept learning and doing it on my own. I believe that 90% of it is practice.

I love that there are so many different ways to create an image with printmaking. I can take the same idea & create totally different prints using different techniques. There’s always something new to learn. I’m a member of the Printmaking Forum on WetCanvas.com, & I’ve learned so much from everyone there. It’s such a talented & generous group of artists.

I’ve been doing embossed linocuts since ‘96, & I love their three-dimensional quality. There’s something architectural about it. I’m starting to explore other techniques that I haven’t done in years, like monotypes. But embossing is my favourite thing.

I sold my work when I first started printing, then I got busy with my architectural career & it took a back seat. Last year, I started a company to sell my work again. I love it – it takes away the stress and monotony of my day job.
