Today we welcome a lovely fellow Aussie (and a blogging bud of mine) Amanda Fuller!
Amanda’s a girl after my own heart – like me, she’s got a lot going on, and today she’s going to share a little about herself and her awesome work!
Where do you live?
In the South Western Suburbs of Sydney
Where do you do your work?
I work, and live, in the converted 1 ½ car garage of my Mum’s home. It’s a tight squeeze to get all the things I need to fit, but I make it work… just!
What’s your favourite place in the world, and why?
I haven’t done very much traveling, but my favourite place that I have visited thus far is Chicago. It’s a beautiful city that reminds me a bit of Sydney actually. I love the architecture and the atmosphere, OH and the blues clubs are amazing!
Tell us a little bit more about yourself! Your ‘day job’ or business, family, hobbies…
I’m a 27-year-old graphic designer who really just loves all things creative! I have had a number of personal and health issues over the last 2 years, and have been unable to work for that time. My health is improving and over the last few months I have slowly but steadily been making my way back into a working mode.
In person I am quite shy, and find it hard to talk to people I have just met, but once I get to know you I am fairly outgoing. I love to sing, listen to music, watch movies and read magazines especially Frankie and RealLiving. I love period dramas like Pride & Prejudice and Cranford.
I am obsessed with stationery!! I’m a very passionate person about the things that interest me and the people I hold dear and I can be a little “all or nothing†at times. My Dad passed away in 2004 from Motor Neurone Disease. He was 49 and I still miss him every day. In 2006 my Mum got married again to an American so now I have a Step-Dad who lives here and a Step-Sister, Step-Brother and Step-Sister-In-Law who live in the States which is pretty cool. I have one older Sister who is married and the Mum of my Niece who just turned two and my Nephew who was just born in September. I live a very quiet life, compared to most, but I like it that way!
What did you want to be ‘when you grew up’?
I always knew I wanted to be a Designer of some sort. When I left High School I was certain I wanted to be an Interior Designer… turns out that while I love Interior Design, it isn’t what I want to do for a “careerâ€.
How did you first get into your craft/art?
As I mentioned I started out in Interior Design and discovered it wasn’t for me. Being stuck in deciding what facet of Design I wanted to be a part of, I enrolled at COFA [College of Fine Arts UNSW] in their Bachelor of Design course which introduced me to a number of areas of design such as Jewellery Design, Textile Design, and more, but it was Graphic Design that seemed to fit best with me. So, I transferred from Uni to TAFE and got my Diploma in Graphic Design and have never looked back! I have since worked in the Newspaper and Magazine Publishing world on publications such as The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age and now have just launched lemon tree lane, my modern eco-friendly paper goods range.
What do you make?
I make greeting cards and prints that can be framed and hung on your wall. Very soon I will be adding more greeting cards and new notecards and gift tags to my stores. In the future I hope to have a wide range of paper goods, which will all be printed on materials that are kind to our environment.
I also specialise in brand design for indie and handmade businesses – helping small creative businesses find a cohesive look and identity through logos, store banners, thank you cards etc. I also offer blogger blog makeovers. Oh and I run an indie, handmade and design blog called Calico & Co which has a strong Australian focus… I have a lot of other small things on the go as well… yep – I like to keep busy!
What are you most proud of making?
That’s a tough one! I’m proud of the fact that while I was still a student it was my designs that were chosen for the branding of the NSW Ombudsman Youth Services brochures etc. Recently, I have been involved in designing a couple of fundraising coffee table photobooks for two charities, which have been very challenging, but I’m proud to be able to do something towards helping those in need here in Australia and overseas. See my blog to find out more soon!
What do you like the most/least about selling your wares online?
Selling online is perfect for me, as it allows me to work from home and set my own schedule, which is essential for me right now. Plus it opens up a whole world of customers to me that I would never have access to in other circumstances!
I love… Being and Aunty, Creaming Soda, Singing, Creating, Stationery, a Long Hot Bath, Colour, Mid-Century Design, Scandinavian Style, Turquoise and Yellow, Magazines… the list really could go on forever!
It drives me crazy when… People spell Stationery with an “ary†not an “eryâ€. It is particularly bad when I see it spelled that way in magazines, on design/creative blogs and most of all when people who sell it on Etsy or MadeIt spell it incorrectly! Just remember E for envelope!
What’s your favourite word? I love words that have a good sound when you say them like Mahogany and Zest. I use the word Fab a lot when blogging, so I guess that would be a fave too,
If you could sum yourself or your work up in one sentence, it would say… I like to keep things simple and uncluttered with a colourful, happy feel and if at all possible, make it retro!
