beaded purseEmbellishing a bag can be a fun and easy project.  You can make the bag yourself.  Or you can purchase a simple tote from most craft stores.

Materials:

Purse or tote made of print fabric.  (If it’s a purse, embellish prior to sewing the bag.)

Beads, vintage jewelry, or any other pretty shiny thing you might love.

Jewelry thread – a fishing-line type of thread.

A beading needle (has a narrow head and body that can fit through the beads.)

Scissors or snips

How to Embellish a Bag:

  1. Choose a motif to embellish.  Choose anywhere you like that will not interfere with a seam.
  2. Thread the beading needle.
  3. Poke through the fabric where you intend to place your first bead, leaving a few inches of thread hanging.
  4. Place your thread through the bead and stitch it down into position.
  5. Tie a knot with your threads.  Do not cut!
  6. Move to the next place that you want a bead and make a little embroidery knot on the back side.  Do not cut!
  7. Now poke through the fabric again and place your bead.
  8. Come out the back side and make an embroidery knot.
  9. Repeat until you are happy with your design. beaded purse-1

Jewelry Making Tips:

Knotting on each end of the bead keeps the bead positioned snugly on the fabric. And if the thread breaks, you won’t lose all of your work.

Choose a length of thread shorter than you would for embroidery.

Don’t be in a hurry.
