This week we welcome  the lovely Michelle Lorimer from Wing By Sea. Michelle makes some gorgeous jewellery… see for yourself!

Where do you live?

Avalon, NSW

Where do you do your work?

I work in the living room rather than the study, I like the space, the light, the tv for company, and the big dining room table!

What’s your favourite place in the world, and why?

Oh, that’s a tough one. I think I go for the feel of a time rather than a particular place. Sunny relaxed happy times. That can be down the coast on a family holiday or out on my own front porch.

Tell us a little bit more about yourself! Your ‘day job’ or business, family, hobbies…

My day job is working part-time as a Graphic designer in-house for a large company full of science-types. It works well with taking care of my little boy, my husband is home the days I work. I work on Wing By Sea when I should be watching tv and sleeping! To get back some ‘me’ time I recently took up crochet – it’s the perfect little hobby, portable and quick, and very cute!

What did you want to be ‘when you grew up’?

A ‘designer’! Didn’t really matter which particular discipline. I ended up choosing Product Design when I was in Year 11.

How did you first get into your craft/art?

I can’t even remember, it was so long ago. I do remember doing work experience in I think year 10, in two jewellery shops. One of the stores did a lot of custom work and stringing repairs, which I got to work on. I loved looking at all the loose gemstones, like a pirate’s treasure!

What do you make?

I make jewellery! I love making all sorts of things actually, but there is something so amazing about jewellery, the scale of it, the details, the variety of materials and finishes, that is so immensely satisfying.

What are you most proud of making?

Anything fiddly! I’m rather proud of my ‘swing‘ range of earrings, deceptively simple, but it took a bit of time to get the design working really well.

What do you like the most/least about selling your wares online?

The thing I like the most is the ‘anytime’ ability of it all. I can work on the shop at any time of day, I can receive sales while I sleep! I send my pieces around the world, which is just so amazing to me.

I love…

A sunny day, when my kid tells me he loves me or tells me some crazy story, and a hug from my husband.

It drives me crazy when…

…the place is a mess, I can’t think!

What’s your favourite word?

I don’t know about favourite, but I probably use the word ‘dude’ entirely way too much. For which my husband teases me mercilously, as he should!

If you could sum yourself or your work up in one sentence, it would say…

Wing by sea is an eclectic jewellery collection, the result of being inspired by the beautiful things and lovely people I see around me.
