meThis week we welcome Genevieve from MademoiselleG!

Genevieve is an artist with an endearing whimsical style…

Where do you live?

Brussels, Belgium

Where do you work?

Not working yet, I’m still a student.

il_430xN.76813376What is your favourite place in the world?

My favorite place in the world…too hard! I love Brussels but also my hometown near Montreal…The first one for it’s great atmosphere (often rainy, but people are so great here!) the second one because it’s where I grew up and where all my familly is. Also fell in love with the architecture of La Havana..

Tell us a little more about yourself…

Well well, I’m a young miss from the countryside near Montreal in Canada, and grew up with two younger monster sisters, my mom and dad, and many pets! I draw, paint, and create with my ten fingers since I’m a little girl, so let’s say arts have always been my hobby…And they still are! After high school, I made a pre-university diploma in fine arts, and now I just finished a bachelor in history of arts in Brussels, where I met my boyfriend a couple of years ago before I decided to move there. This September I’ll start my last two years at university with a master in cultural management, but I continue to draw and paint part time.

What did you want to be ‘when you grew up’?

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be so many things when I would grow up! A teacher, an archeologist, a painter, and even a fire woman!

When did you get started with your art?il_430xN.88236375

I have always been drawing a lot, and my parents encouraged me all my life to continue. I remember that when I was about 4 or 5 years old, my grandmother even embroidered one of my drawings on a pillow!

Now, I mostly draw and paint…but if I had the time, I would like to do so much more.

Which piece are you most proud of?

I’m pretty proud about my drawings, even if I’m very perfectionist and that according to me, none of them are perfect.

What do you like most about selling online?

What I like about selling online is that small pieces of my world can go everywhere in the world.

il_430xN.35116728I love…

… my lover, my family, ice cream and chocolate, vacations, life in general even if it’s not always like we wanted to be.

It drives me crazy…

… when I see injustice and lies that people have to live with.

If you could sum yourself up in one sentence it would say…

Welcome to the whimsical and nostalgic world of a timid dreamer.

il_430xN.80875981Where do you live?

I live on our very quite and peaceful rural five acre property here in the South West of Western Australia.

Where do you do your work?

I am so lucky ! My studio is at the bottom of my garden. It is a one room cottage that was originally accommodation at a local timber mill and was built early 1900’s. It’s a quirky little cottage with fireplace, crooked chimney and verandah…I just love it!

What’s your favourite place in the world, and why?

Home is definitely my most favourite place…It’s just so beautiful here! We are surrounded by thousands of acres of National Park, and feel so lucky to be living so close to nature.

Tell us a little bit more about yourself! Your ‘day job’ or business, family, hobbies…

il_430xN.88422953Well, my ‘day job’ is playing with glass…in fact my whole life seems to revolve around playing with glass LOL… It really is all that I do :)

I have a wonderful husband and a grown up son… our babies are our two dogs that we spoil a lot. And we have two appaloosa horses that don’t do much except look nice in the paddock. We have a VW Kombi Camper that we’ve done up and we like to get away as often as possible… down towards the south coast near Denmark and Augusta are our favourite places.

What did you want to be ‘when you grew up’?

I can remember wanting to be either a mounted police woman or a vet. I am so glad that I am neither LOL

How did you first get into your craft/art?

I’ve been an artist ‘forever’…actually about 20 years… and I used to work a lot with clay. Just over 4 years ago I discovered glass!…it changed my life. That might sound a little dramatic but it’s true :)
I became obsessed with glass, and I think I am still addicted.
I thought that this obsession may have worn off a little by now, but it hasn’t…I still can’t wait to get down to the studio every day, and usually dream about glass every night – LOL.

il_430xN.88429516What do you make?

I mostly make dichroic glass pendants.

I love hand-etching glass, and can spend hours lost in free hand etching… especially etching very fine details.

What are you most proud of making?

Hard question… I think the answer changes every time I open the kiln. At the moment my favorite things are my flower suncatchers…I have a display stand of them in my studio, and really enjoy looking at them.

I love…

feeling connected to the world ! I love that I can live my ideal quite rural lifestyle and a computer can put me in touch with people all over the world.

It drives me crazy when…

Not much drives me crazy at all anymore. I tend to be very optimistic and just solve problems as they come along.

What’s your favourite word?

Mmm… probably ‘Fabulous!’. I tend to say it a lot.

Where do you live?

Sydney, Australia

Where do you do your work?

At the dining room table!

What’s your favourite place in the world, and why?

Favorite place in the world: Sydney’s pretty hard to beat – but London or Venice come a very close equal second!

Tell us a little bit more about yourself! Your ‘day job’ or business, family, hobbies…

I’m an English language teacher by day. Every other spare moment I spend drawing or at least thinking about drawing!! I’m also quite fond of taking long walks on the weekend with my partner in crime around the beautiful parks, bushland and beaches of Sydney.

il_430xN.74154614What did you want to be ‘when you grew up’?

I wanted to be an artist!

How did you first get into your craft/art?

My Mum was an incredibly creative person – and both my parents were forever taking me round the art galleries of Sydney on the weekends so, I grew up in an arty house and was very encouraged by both of them to draw and create from a young age.

What do you make?

I draw charcoal and pastel gals and birds mostly and sell them as prints. I also have a range of greeting cards.

What are you most proud of making?

Gosh! I think I’m quite proud of the body of work I’ve built up over the past year and a half on Etsy.

il_430xN.88038365What do you like the most/least about selling your wares online?

I love the interaction with the people who stop by my shop. I love the Etsy community and the blogging community – I had no idea that that was one of the perks of opening an Etsy store! I also love being able to put up a new drawing in my shop and get some feedback more or less instanly. I also love being in control and not having to go through gallery curators in order to sell and get my work seen.

I can’t think of one downside to selling online!

I love…

cats, shopping for art supplies, drawing, fine spring weather, the online community!

It drives me crazy when…

People make a big deal about standing in a queue at the post office and sigh very loudly and breathe all over my neck!

What’s your favourite word?

Thank you!
