Now, honestly? I don’t have any interest in the Melbourne Cup, or fashion competitions in general. So I’m lucky this one managed to accidentally catch my attention – because I think it’s awesome.
Fashions on the Field is a yearly event held at the most prestigious horse race here in Australia – the Melbourne Cup. Women come from all over Australia to compete, and many spend ridiculous amounts of money on their outfit.
Not Jaydee Paino. She found a vintage dress online (they don’t say where, but I’m hazarding a guess at Etsy here, people!) from America, and then altered with the help of a friend. The dress cost her $18. And does it (and she) not look freaking gorgeous?
She has now turned that $18, and fun with a sewing machine, into $100,000. Nice. Well done, lady!

Oh my goodness, that is fantastic! And I agree Jess, my first thought was Etsy too.
Just shows you don’t need to spend $1000’s on a designer brand dress to look fab! Be different! 🙂
wow! awesome – what a steal and she looks FAB!!!
This is what I’ve always thought. A brand name does not always equal gorgeous (its means something is well marketed). Looking great is about personal style and flair. She does look freaking gorgeous!!
Fantastic. Love the horse print on it
now that’s what i call a genious 🙂
Oh my gosh, it’s divine! Dang now I know I’m not spending the weekend in the garden AGAIN.
This is brilliant! Even my husband was impressed by this story.
Can you imagine how many awesome vintage finds you could get with 100K?! (or a holiday for that matter).
She did such an amazing job transforming this dress! She actually purchased it from me [yes, on Etsy]. My store is called Troubadour Vintage. 🙂 Way to go, Jaydee!
