I don’t think I take enough time to really appreciate all the joys of working from home.
It’s just become my normal life now… but whenever I have to travel to the city for something, and am rudely thrust into the hustle and bustle of life outside my little cocoon, I always come home with a deeper appreciation of just how lucky I am.
I hate getting up early, getting dressed while still half-zombiefied.รย I hate having to rush my first cup of tea because I only have enough time to shower and dress before I’m out the door. I hate being away from my husband, cat, and home all day long. I hate sitting inรย commuter traffic, and feeling my blood pressure rise.
So, the fact that the majority of my days avoid all of these things, let me take a moment to share what I AM grateful for in this work-at-home life.
- I don’t have to get up early
- I don’t have to sit in traffic or commute every day
- I get to wear whatever I want
- I get to eat lunch and dinner with my husband every day – and he makes it for me
- I have the flexibility to take a nap, read a novel for an hour, or go lay out on the grass under a tree for an hour if I’m feeling tired or out of energy
- I get to structure my own work-day to suit my energy levels
- I can be flexible when an opportunity comes my way
- I can curl up on the bed and cuddle my kitty any time I want to
- I can exercise at the time of day that suits me, not fit it in around my job
And that’s just part of my list.
Do you work from home, too? What are you grateful for?
I also work from home, and my answer would be “all of the above” ๐
Good post Jess,i agree with all of the above and;
Making a good coffee – exactly when i want it
Being able to schedule exercise in when it suits around my day
Sneaky lunch dates with hubby
Being able to be home for girls at the end of school and pick them up if its raining or if they whinge loud enough ๐
I love:
kitty cat snuggles
free coffee
pajama pants if i want
mid-day outings for supplies or “research”
no jerky boss
watching Netflix while I work
All of the above minus the bit about my husband, who has to go to work, plus spending time with my boys. My work agreed to a short term working from home arrangement when my second boy was born and now he’s three… I’m not mentioning it until they do!
I work from home too. After 2 years of it, it’s very easy to feel complacent about it, and even to complain about it. No sick days, no paid holidays, no guarantee of steady income …. blah, blah, blah. Whenever I start to feel that way I tell myself: the worst day working for yourself is better than the best day working for someone else. And it is ๐
Ha, this sure made me laugh – “getting dressed while still half-zombiefied” ๐ I know what you mean and though I still have some time till I have to find a job, I’m starting to consider working from home, having your own cosy cocoon sounds awesome ^^
One of my job allows working from home, and I love so many things:
Like Jenny said – kitty cat snuggles
but also:
– my choice of music (or no music) while I work
– option of working super early in my PJs, yet a break for gym/grocery store
– breaks for napping, reading, a bit of tv
– eating/cooking at home
– option of working at a nearby coffee place
I would agree with most of your points too, my fav things would be:
– Not getting up early! And having siestas
– Spending some of the day outside, instead of staring out an office window wishing I could go enjoy a nice day. I think our dog would also agree with this one.
– Not having to buy clothes for an office, just dressing to suit how I feel that day.
There are a few negatives but the positives most definitely outweigh them.
Agree with all your points! (except that 9 out of 10 times I am the one making the meals).
I would only add that also: my working space is set however I like it, and I can also work from different places around the house with my laptop, depending on where the sun is hitting.
And working with natural light instead of office fluorescent is much nicer ๐
Oh.. and forgot: my social life is way richer this way. Because when I see people, I really want to see them and enjoy the experience. Whilst when you work surrounded by people (who mostly you don’t care about) all day long, you long for having time by yourself. So you end up saying “no” to people you care about too often, just because you need some time to yourself. Whilst if you work by yourself, you make an effort to go out and have quality time with your friends.
I do agree with all of the above and I will love to work from home as I am doing now.
