I am SO excited to share this video with you today! It’s been in the works for a while, and I loved creating it so much that I’m planning on making one of these videos every month or two. That is, if you enjoy it…
In the video I show you the entire process of making my Cloud Earrings – from start to finish, with every single step included. Of course, if I showed you this at real-time speed we’d be here for an hour, so I’ve sped up much of the process. Nick got a giggle out of seeing me saw silver at 8x normal speed, and hopefully you will, too.
HUGE props to Nick, by the way, for creating the music for this video. I went to him yesterday afternoon and asked ‘can you make the music for this video… by tonight’? Nothing like giving the man a bit of notice, hey?
He’s got some whiz-bang electronic music program that he’s mucked around with for years, but this is the first time he’s ‘finished’ a piece – and he put it together especially for the video. So thank you, honey!
I hope you enjoy it – please do let me know in the comments! Should I make more of these videos?
Oh, and these are the earrings I made in the video.

I really enjoyed seeing your process – lots of fine details add up to a lovely end result. Having seen your work firsthand made it even more special to watch. Kudos to Nick for the music too!
Yes please! Loved it and love the earrings.
Love the video! How on earth do you keep from nicking your fingers when you’re cutting the clouds? It’s wonderful to see the behind-the-scenes of your work, Jess – keep the videos coming!
To be honest, I’ve never thought about that, it’s never happened! I do all sorts of other damage to my hands though ;D
Great video Jess! I always love to see people at work.
I love seeing other people’s work processes. I hope this video gives people an idea how much time + effort goes into making something that dainty 🙂
I love the video and the earrings! Please keep them coming. I love to see how other people create the things they do…very inspiring!
That was fascinating! Thanks so much for filming it for us. Please do make more videos for us. You are so, very talented.
Oh, and the music was perfect for it too, good job Nick!
Jess what is the tool called that you cut the silver with?
Merryl, it’s a ‘Piercing Saw’ – http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/piercingsaw.html
Sawing in jewellery-making is called ‘piercing’.
Thanks for the link Jess. Wow what a deadly looking tool. It was really interesting watching your video and seeing the various processes required to end up with the finished product :o)
I love this video Jess! I really enjoyed watching the process. I am a beader and have thought about learning silver smithing. Looks like fun but very involved process. I also really enjoyed the music in this video too. Great job!
fantastic video Jess! I love how you slowed some areas, allowed us to hear the filing and sped up others. The music was great too. There is a lot of effort put in to make them looks so beautiful and effortless. Love those earrings before and love them even more now!
Wow that’s so much work ! Thank u for sharing, it’s cool to see the behind the scenes process!
great video – loved seeing your process!
Wow! This was really interesting, and certainly makes me appreciate the work that’s gone into each piece. Can’t wait to see the next one!
I was mesmerized by the video. Thanks for sharing.
Jess, I loved watching this so much. Thanks to you and Nick for putting it together. It really shows the love and skill (and time and effort) that you put into each piece that you make. I watched it with my boy Felix, who is 2 1/2, and he said, “What hands!” and told me he likes the ads in the sidebar. (That conversation went: “What are those?” “Ads.” “Oh, nice.”) I agree: what skilled hands. What a legend.
Facinating to watch your process! Hope to see more 🙂
Loved it, Jess. It was so good to see all the behind the scenes parts that are sometimes forgotten that go into making such lovely things. Would love to see more videos. Can’t wait. Thanks.
I always have fun sitting back and watching someone else and how they work and what their process is to get to the finished product. Have you ever used a cup bur before?? They are awesome for getting the burs off the end of an earring hook and giving a nice rounded finish.
Hi Emma – I haven’t, it’s one of those things I keep meaning to get and just not getting around to it! Must do so…
Great video, Jess! I enjoyed very much watching the process, it’s very interesting for us who do not work on jewelry 🙂
If it wasn’t for time-lapse, how long would it be? I guess you spend hours every day finishing those edges…
Hmm, it would take me over an hour, for sure, to do all of those things, but usually I do it in bits and pieces. For example, I’d cut out a number of orders, then file, then solder.
The silver then has to sit in the pickle for a while (the liquid I dropped them in after I soldered them) so I’d make other things in the meantime. I’d never just make one pair from start-to-finish in one hit! 🙂
Well put together Jess. Jewellery is an area in which I am totally clueless so it was absolutely intriguing to follow the artistic and technical process. What I though was especially successful was the way you played with speeding up and slowing down the video.
If I were you I would certainly do more videos-we are all waiting for the next.
Lynda
Thanks Lynda, I was hoping that would show the process a bit more clearly without having to make you sit through the whole thing in real-time! 😉
awesome video Jess, I love seeing how things are made 🙂
always love seeing someone’s process. great job jess.
It was a very enjoyable video. I love to see how you make your earrings and the video (plus music) goes well together. Thank you for taking the time to show us your process and I agree with everyone else – keep on making more videos!
hum.
tricky question;
where is the video?
i dont seem to see it at all 🙁
Hi tea, if it doesn’t load above, just follow this link – http://youtu.be/vxwxguATVyo
Wow…I knew I was interested in seeing how you make your gorgeous, delicate jewelry, but it was even more fascinating than I thought it would be! I loved seeing how these are made, and it IS helpful to really get a sense of how much work goes into each piece. Great job, both by you (as always!) and by Nick! Thanks!
Oh, and I meant to say that I would also LOVE to see how you set up a photo shoot! I always admire the way you showcase your jewelry. 🙂
Brilliantly done Jess! I really enjoyed seeing you work and the video was done so well. Great way to “show & tell”. Love it!
This was wonderful to see your process, it adds even more value to your work.. You’re very talented ma’am!
Jess, like everything you do, the video was so great and they are one of my favorite designs of yours. I was so excited to see that you made a video of your process. Thanks for sharing so much, you are a great inspiration and so fun to watch. Even with the time elapse, you zoomed in at key times enabling us to see the full process. Very well done! Would love to see more! Thanks
I loved your video! Very inspiring!
