As I write this, I am laying here flat on my back with my laptop balanced on my legs. This evening I just bent over and my back went BAM – so I am a little bit immobile!
It’s so frustrating when something like this happens, isn’t it? I mean, I *just* finished my first week back on the C25K running plan, have started swimming, and it’s coming into the busiest time of the year for my business.
Frack.
But enough of my whinging. I only mention it because hey, sometimes things don’t go according to plan, but what can you do?
How about indulging in some deep thinking – or at least some dreaming?
I’m currently working on my 40 before 40 list, because I was too slack to get a 30 before 30 done, and I figure that this way, I’ll have 9 1/2 years to get it all achieved.
40 things seems a lot – I’m only 1/2 way through my list so far, because I’ve run out of things that I deem important enough to put on there. Perhaps I need to lower my bar. Or get more creative!
So I thought – why not take another tack and simplify the question? Therefore:
What’s one thing you’ve yet to do in your life that you know you must absolutely do before you die?
I threw this out on twitter last night, and here were some of the responses I got…
Take my mother to England and drive around the countryside with her looking at old houses, castles, and boats -Â @furry_jen
White christmas…. -Â @katrinahigham
Travel 🙂 -Â @kir_s_ten
Haha yeah – my list is too long but! Probably the one thing I have to do is one day be a dad 🙂 -Â @entreprenerds
Have a happy and healthy family of my own – @trudyflorence
Sky diving! -Â @studiolakshmi
Go to London -Â @Blackcurrantpix
I love that these answers all seem to revolve around experiences, rather than accumulating or producing things. Travel, family, excitement.
Experiences, not things.
Interesting, right?
So – what’s my one thing?
I want to see it snow. I have stood on snow twice in my life (only once that I remember) but I have never seen snow falling. That is top of the list for me, I think.
What’s yours?

Oh you need to come to Canada! Well- we actually don’t have as much snow now as we normally do this time of year but just this morning- completely white with snow falling in big flakes. Personally, I get tired of it so it’s nice to hear from someone who doesn’t experience snow very often in their lifetime…& maybe I can appreciate it a little more….until I have to go driving in it:/
One thing that I really want to do is live in/near Rome at some point. Even if it’s for a month. The plan is for my husband & I to travel around Europe for 3-6 months at a time when we retire…that would work. Maybe rent a villa or something. We have been once together before & are planning to go again in 2013.
Janelle, Canada is high up on our list! My brother-in-law lives over there – on Victoria – so it’s a no-brainer that we’ll come and visit one year. I’m hoping we’ll come over for a White Christmas!
Oh- you would love it! Victoria is such a wonderful place. I was there at the University for a piano summer school years ago & I absolutely loved it!
Wow, we are totally on the same wavelength, Jess! I’ve been working on a list of things I want to do before I die (I don’t really like the term ‘bucket list’ but that’s essentially what it is!). And since I never got around to doing a 30 before 30, I’ve been writing up a 40 before 40 list as well! I don’t have many ideas yet, because most things I think of seem to trivial and not important enough.Â
But I really want to be a passenger in a V8 Supercar being driven at top speed by one of my favourite drivers around the Bathurst track at Mt Panorama. I also want to drive around the track myself.Â
This one is really cliche, but I want to go swimming with dolphins and/or whales. They’ve always been my favourite creatures and I’ve wanted to swim with them for as long as I can remember.Â
Now you’ve inspired me to get started on figuring out the rest of my list! xx

Ohh, driving a race car around a track – that should definitely be on my list, too! I’m a bit of a hoon.. ;D
It snows exactly right now, and in a nice way like a romantic slow snowing 😉 Beautiful!
Wow Jess, this is a deep thinkin blog you’ve written…what brought this on for you? I personally dont have a to do list, i dont like to plan, from my life experience so far, plans frustrates me and i was faced to question my mortality at the tender age of 33. I’m just grateful to open my eyes each morning and take a deep breathe and savour the day, no matter how good or bad…ha ha ha…but I will say, I must do ITALY…wow if i were single again, i could handle being serenaded by some young Italian man, lets say for at least a year! 🙂
I haven’t really figured out what do I really want to do or to see. Just a few things, of course, like learning Spanish and traveling to Ireland, but nothing global. By the age of 25 I managed to live in 3 different countries and now I live in Arctic Norway when we have got tones of snow, the mountains, Â the Northern Lights and the midnight sun. When you have these magical things around you, you kinda forget that there is someone out there who has never seen the snow 😉 But I believe you will have a white Christmas one day, Jess! Maybe even see the Northern Lights too, who knows 😉
Ahh, the aurora are definitely high up my list of things I want to experience! And some of my ancestors come from Norway – I should really visit there one day 🙂 (Yes, they were vikings, apparently! ;D )
Im so sorry to hear that you’re hurt! I hope you recover quickly and feel better soon. Take it easy until you’re feeling better and don’t make it any worse! 🙁
One thing I want to do is go to Disney land! Haha childish but one of my dreams! Also be fit enough for a six pack, but I don’t think that one will ever happen…
Thanks Danielle! xx
what i want before I die… I spose a house I can call y own. we have moved so many times and only rented that somewhere I can do what i want whenever would be nice.
On the 40 before 40 list.. is to travel overseas somewhere. this is now in basic planning as a month before I turn 40 I will be visiting a friend in the US and hopefully my sister in Finland, in 2013!Â
Ohh, I’d love to see Finland! And I can relate re having a house. I love our little 2-room shed, but a ‘real’ house will be nice one day!
I have a lot of places on my “must see” list, but what I’d really like to do is rescue a dog from the pound 🙂
Just need to work on getting a house with a yard first…!
PS – Wishing you a speedy recovery Jess 🙂
goodness! I’m too late for a 40 before 40 list… and I’ve already done a lot of the things that I wanted to do (although there’s always room for more travel!). My burning desire is to keep making things until I die 🙂
