Do you have the phenomenon of Traffic Signal Box Art in your city?
I think it’s an awesome example of public art – for the people, by the people. Basically, every set of traffic lights has this big metal box near it that contains all the electronics to make the lights work their magic. Someone, somewhere, decided that these big grey boxes were kinda ugly – and decided to encourage local artists to paint them!
We have hundreds of these around Brisbane, so I thought I’d share a few with you today.
The first is by an online friend of mine, Melanie, who runs the Etsy store Wiccked. She posted some shots on Facebook of a box she’s just painted with her daughter:
Many of the works relate to their place in some way… but then again, many don’t! Here are some other fine examples…
1. Secret by Katherine Joy Ganzon & Kathryn McClelland & Caitlin Jane Rowe
2. Law Week 2002 by Lynden Stone
3. All Hallow by Louise Wruck
4. Geisha by Link Iselin
5. Pop Art Girl by Cassandra Edney & Annie Campbell
6. Perfection (remember the little things) by Scott (fischer) Moorhead
7. Untitled by Elsje Downes
You can browse ALL of the Brisvegas boxes here.

Lovely post^^ We have them here on the coast but I like the ones in Brisbane the best, I think they’re such a great way to brighten up a city
Wow!! I’ve never seen this before, but what a wonderful way to bring a little life into such a boring object. Love it!! Thanks so much for sharing. 🙂

Bonnie
Thanks Jess! I’ve admired them for a long time now, and often photographed them when driving around the city. Now I have one of my own and one that I helped with! It’s very cool! Hard work, but satisfying.
Ours are outside Brisbane though, so they’re not on the artforce website, they’re on the Urban Projects one. This is mine – http://www.urbansmartprojects.com/tsbs/view/1581 (M1350) – and this is Jade’s – http://www.urbansmartprojects.com/tsbs/view/1577 (M1342). They should have photos of our work on there shortly.
